  1. Suggestions would be,  Tulip Tree which is the tallest growing native tree in North America.  In the Wild they will get up to 200 feet tall.  In Cultivation they reach 100 feet.  If you live in the South I would suggest live and willow oak.  Other suggestions would be Sugar Maple, Red Maple, White Oak, Red Oak,Horse chestnut, Hop hornbeam, Hornbeam.  All these trees grow relatively tall and will take in a lot of CO2

  2. Trees release oxygen, through photosynthesis, rather than absorb carbon dioxide.

    Forest trees,such as oak,willow,horse chestnut

are most efficient by reason of their size, but would be unsuitable for the average garden.

  3. Go for a mix of evergreen and deciduous trees that will provide year round CO2 intake.  Some Jatropha tree species are being used in some of the areas where rain forest has been devastated,  as they grow very quickly, have a high CO2 throughput,  and are also local to those areas.  Some of them are hardier than others,  though it is possible to fund their planting in overseas areas eg: http://www.trees4good.com/co2-offset-via...

If you're looking for trees for particular places,  plant according to the hardiness, soil, and water availabilty for growth.  Some trees such as some Oak species are fantastic, but are fairly slow growers, so it depends on whether you're looking for long term CO2 intake, or to make the most gains in the near term.  Otherwise,  Sequioias, such as Giant and Coastal Redwoods, grow to huge trees and ultimately have enormous CO2 intake levels.   Some of the Eucalyptus species are also very fast growing, potentially 30 feet in 15 years or so,  and are also evergreen with a long growth period.  The hardiest is mainly Eucalyptus gunnii.

Hope this helps.  Good luck!  Rob
