  1. dude, you are already on the wrong foot, you should get a ford ranger, or a nissan frontier. they get high mileage for compact to midsize trucks. you can even imptove the milage by buying a tonneau cover for the truck bed.

  2. i do not know the mileage figures for each but i prefer the chevy as i have owed many and they are super easy to work on yourself, very easy to tune (for performance and mileage), parts are abundant and cheap (enough to offset mileage differences)

you could improve the mileage by changing your driving habits, getting a manual, proper tire inflation, narrower tires (less drag), removing tailgate when not needed, abstaining from a/c, get a truck with a rear window and open it to drag air out of the cab and reduce resistance rolling off the roof into the bed, ram air intake, free flowing exhaust, many more ways

  3. There really isn't enough information to say for sure which would get better fuel mileage.  One with a manual will tend to get getter mileage and two wheel drives get better mileage than 4x4s.  All in all if both trucks are pretty comparable in features, they will probably get similar mileage.

To make the truck itself capable of better fuel mileage keep the truck in optimal running condition with properly inflated correctly sized tires, a good tune up ,oil change, use fuel injector cleaner every 6 months or 6000 miles, and check the air filter regularly.  If you add a topper in many cases that will help the aerodynamics of the vehicle giving you better fuel mileage.

The other way to save fuel is by changing your driving habits.  In a truck especially you need to drive conservatively or else it doesn't matter what you do to it.  Look ahead and try and anticipate traffic, coast up to stop signs instead of powering up to them, take your time accelerating up to speed (what I have the most trouble with) and if it looks like traffic is slowing down ahead and slow down in advance.
