  1. Consumer Reports reviewed the first boxes to come out, and it tends to agree w/ the consensus opinions on the web so far: the Insignia/Zenith box, both manufactured by LG and sold at Best Buy and Circuit City, operate cooler and provide a slightly better image than the Magnavox box produced by Funai and sold at Walmart. I haven't seen a Digitalstream box yet (sold by Radio Shack) and I know little about the ones sold on the Internet.

Don't expect bells and whistles: the coupon eligible boxes so far have simple menus, few if any front panel controls, and only RF and composite video outputs.

  2. Today, it will probably be the Zenith DTT900 at Circuit City.

More info:  Why do I think so?  Well, I too surfed the Internet getting the reviews of most present Converter boxes available today before buying mine.  The majority of the reviews kept pointing to the Zenith DTT900 as the better unit.  I went with that.  Sound logical?
