  1. In 1672, Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet were sent by Governor Frontenac of New France (modern-day Canada) to look for a route to the Pacific Ocean.  In the process, along with five other Frenchmen and 2 Indian Guides, they explored parts of modern-day Wisconsin and Illinois and traveled down the Mississippi to the point of modern-day Arkansas.  They were likely the first white men to enter many of the areas in the Upper Mississippi basin.
