Which type of hamster?

I had a syrian hamster who was in a ferplast cage cage with a shelf cos she was quite old and couldn't climb and she had to be put down.

Now I have this lovely cage which doesn't have tubes but is big enough for climbing toys.

I'm not sure I want another syrian cos of the size they get.

Can someone advise me what type of dwarf hamser to get?

I would only like one and am prepared to put in the attention time and plenty of toys so it doesn't get lonely.

Which type should I get?

  1. Well, I think you should get a small group of dwarven hamsters. They are very amusing to watch, and make great pets. They may be abit nippy, but they can be tamed easily. They are very sociable, so will enjoy being within a group rather than being caged on its own. However, the size of the group depends on the size of your cage; the bigger the cage, the larger the group. The gaps in the cage bars should be small, as drarven hamsters can easily  fit through them. If you are interested in buying this time of hamster, then I strongly recommend that you purchase an acrylic cage. They are much neater, and escape proof, they usually come with plenty of accessories. They are generally more expensive then bar cages, but they make the hamster feel more secure. However they may be a little harder to maintain.

  2. I have a Chinese dwarf hamster on her own and have had her for 3 days and is fine on her own plus they are the most docile of the hamsters and love being handled and love playing with toys so if i were you i would have a Chinese dwarf hamster.

    good luck!

  3. you should definetely get a dwarf hamser, and they are fine by themselves. i had two winter whites but they started fighting so i had to seperate them, and bothe of them have been doing fine without a partner!  i would suggest getting a winter white because they are the medium sized dwarf hamsters, so their not too small, and their super cute!! you can get them in three colors:saphire, normal, or pearl.  so good luck and hope i helped!!

  4. DWARF HAMMY ROCK ON! i had two of these hammys and thay were the best they love the wheel the tubes and treats there the best hammies around, BUT BE SURE TO GET TWO THEY GET VERY LONLY. GOOD LUCK =)

  5. I breed roborovski hamsters and would really recomend them after have chinese (females are agressive) , russian (if not looked after properly in first couple of weeks they are easily stressed) and syrians (love them to bits!). Roborovski hamsters are the smallest and fastest breed of domestic hamster in the world. The size obviously cannot be altered but if you socialize it well, he/she will slow down when being handled. They like to live in pairs and becuase of their size they are not diffcult to home just try and give them as much space to burn off that energy as possible - they love wheels! They are happy living on their own as long as they are given lots of stimulation. Only downsides are they are difficult to handle at first and because their more private bits are so small they are difficult to s*x. (hint with sexing, if you did get one to confirm its s*x from around 3 months+ check to see if the belly has a yellowish tint - if so it is a male!)

  6. roborovskis are brilliant (soz if i spelt that wrong!) i had one called dobby. we rescued him from pets at home cos he was the last and no one wanted to buy him, we bought him that day with no intention and we were glad we did! sadly he died a while ago but he lived a happy life. i know dobby lived on his own but i would reccomend you get two dwarf hamsters, they get lonely and they run very fast. if your looking for a hamster that you can play with and give attention to, then get a syrian, i had one called timmy and he was so sweet. get another syrian. robos dont mind not much attention and just like to run around and i admit they are adorable but they're not for holding. i see that you had a female, i had one and she bit my best friends and she passed away due to kidney problems. timmy was very sweet and docile, he liked being handled and loved the attention. males last much longer and are more relaxed. in my opinion they dont smel as much either! i hope you get a nice hamster and i hope this helps.

  7. Remember you need to get a pair of dwarves rather than just 1. I'd get robos.
