Which type of lawnmower is less expensive to operate?

With the increase in gas prices, I was thinking about an electric lawn mower. But then I get my electric bill and it is through the roof, too. Which would be the better choice?

The cord on an electric mower is a real pain--I'd only recommend an electric to someone with a townhouse, and then I'd say they should get the old fashioned hand powered ones other people mentioned.  For any good size yard, use a gas powered mower.  

For my .3 acre lot, I can get through a whole summer filling up my 2 gallon gas can once, and I still have some left over when I'm finished.  I can't imagine the cost savings would be noticable--you won't miss seven bucks per year to fill a gas tank, and you won't notice the difference on your power bill.

the amount of fuel a normal mower uses is tiny, its not like you mow every day or even once a week most of the year, the other option is a hand mower, that use a roller system to cut grass,

It really depends on how big your yard is...if you are even considering an electric mower, then you might have a small enough yard to go with the motorless manual variety that Sufi mentioned. The electric cord can be combersome and dangerous...I use a manual mower, built by the Brill company...had it for 8 years now, still very sharp, never needed to have the blades re-sharpened yet...I still have to use a weed wacker tho...and that is electric...doing the edging by hand takes too long.

Electric is way better for the enviroment, less exhaust gasses, quieter.

Sufi's talking about the old reel mowers. They still make those, you know. Supposed to cut better' gas or electric. We use an electric...cuts OK, but the damned cord is a pain. Anyway, Black & Decker has one at the outlet mall in San Marcos for 99 bucks.
