Alkaline?NiMh?NiCad? Does it make any difference whether the battery is 9V, AA, AAA or other? Your experience w/ charger brands? Are all these types of batteries easily recyclable in major cities?

  1. The voltage doesn't make any difference.  NiCad batteries are the worst environmentally.  Cadmium is a heavy metal and toxic.  It needs to be disposed of properly.  Many places that sell rechargeable batteries will recycle them for you.  None of the other battery types are considered to have any toxic substances in them according to federal guidelines and can be disposed of in normal household trash.  But it there's a place in your area to recycle them, I'd encourage you to do so.

  2. In my experience with rechargeable batteries and chargers, Duracell Pre-Charged Rechargeable batteries are great! You can buy them with the charger or separately and they are great - inexpensive, come pre-charged,  charge quickly and last a long time!
