I copy a lot of my dvd's and lend them to friends. They often don't work in their dvd players, but they work fine in mine. Which type, like DVD+R OR DVD-R, would be most universal?

  1. My experience has been that the DVD-R's are the most universal.

  2. DVD-R discs are more universal in that they'll play on older players...but DVD+R discs will play on just about any player made in the last five years and are less susceptible to burn errors than DVD-R discs thanks to the differences in the disc structure. The error correction on DVD+R is more capable, resulting in less binned discs.

Michael Spath wrote an excellent article in 2003 about the benefits of DVD+R over DVD-R.
