  1. First to Brad L, you are dead wrong.  US Steel on the shores of Lake Michigan produces 6 million tons of steel per year.  The majority of the tonnage is sold to the auto industry.  Sales to the appliance, can, housing, and motorcycle industry make up the rest of the tonnage.  The steel is made from a mixture of raw material and scrap steel.

As to the type of steel, it is a very low carbon steel.  This allows for better forming during the stamping process.  The steel is galvanized for rust prevention.  That is also done in plant.  US Steel is ISO 9001 and ISO/TS16949 certified.

I have worked on the rolling line shown in this link many times.

Steel making is far from dead in the USA.

  2. They use as much aluminum as possible.

  3. not sure what type of steel is used but i know how they cure it. By putting the steel at the bottom of the lake for a while before they use it.

  4. It cannot be American steel. We have no steel mills. I suspect it comes from China. It could also be recycled Chinese steel.

  5. Plate steel is used.
