  1. DNA is what genes are made of. (except in some viruses which have genes of RNA)

  2. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a nucleic acid that contains the coded genetic instructions and the regulatory noncoding sequences in a helical double strand. This is what is usually meant when referring to genes.

RNA is the single strand ribonucleic acid that has many forms and functions including messenger RNA (mRNA) that carries the transcript of the gene out of the nucleus for translation. RNA conveys genetic information but is not the usual form it is stored in (except for retroviruses).
