  1. If you are into Jewish Delicatessen Food, New York is Number 1.

Pastrami and Corned Beef Sandwiches on New York Seeded Rye Bread Piled 3 inches high.Lox and Bagels with a slice of white onion.

My Favorite place is Katz's at 205 E.Houston St. in Manhattan's East side. Google Katz's Deli to see their entire menu and the history of the place. All famous people go there.

If you have never gone to Coney Island, you must go to Nathans Hot Dogs, just so you can say you did. From any place in Manhattan it is a nice Subway ride( About 1/2 above ground in Brooklyn )takes you within a block of Nathans.

If you had Italian Food on the list, I recomend going to The Bronx's Little Italy on Arthur Ave.It is so much better than Houston/Sullivan St where the SanGenaro Feast is held every year.

Go to Arthur Ave / 187th St. for some of the best Italian Food in the WORLD. The 2 big ones, Dominics and Marios, have been there forever, and only get better. The portions are huge, so go hungry.

  2. the hotdogs are good :)

  3. Pizza - Rays Famous

    Jewish - Katz Deli

    Hot Dogs - Grays Papaya

Cheesesteak - Genos in Philly! Not NY!

  4. Chinese food isn't any better in NYC than in any other major city. I can get cheesecake anywhere.

Here are the things you MUST try when there:

    NY style pizza

    Sabrett's hot dog

    NY hot soft pretzel

Things you can try but you may be a bit disappointed:

    Deli sandwiches

I'm looking at this as a Houstonian who grew up in the NYC area (Moved to Texas 30 years ago, but still go back a few times a year). Houston has over 10,000 restaurants of all types.

We have a few good deli's here (including one also called Katz's) and some so-so deli's. I find NY deli sandwiches too expensive for what you get. I've been to Carnegie in NYC and left disappointed. Good pastrami, but the price nearly gave me another heart attack. So, a deli is not a "must have" with me.

On the other hand, I can NOT get excellent NY style pizza in Houston. I can find good pizza, but not great. Ditto with hot dogs. There's nothing like a Sabrett's with mustard and k***t. We have a local hot dog chain that is pretty good (for grilled dogs), but not the same as a pushcart. As for pretzels, those doughy things you see at movie theatres just don't compare to what you get from a pushcart.

So there are my "must haves" and my "can try" selections.

  5. falafel - you can get a pita any time day or night in NYC - and they are cheap and great.

Also - some of my friends really like the hot nuts (the ones covered in sugar and sold from little carts).

Brunch is fantastic in New York too, any Saturday or Sunday you can get brunch almost anywhere in Manhattan.

I also think that the coffee is better in New York than anywhere else (not more fancy - just better).

You should try menupages.com to try and find great food during your visit - there are user reviews and you can sort by area of town or by type of food.  Also nymag.com has a great searchable function for good food.

  6. Sushi and seafood is the best in new york ....if u go to brooklyn it also has great sushi or Chinese food , 86th street

  7. I think what stands out the most are the Hot Dogs, Pretzels, Cheesecake, Pizza, Bagels and Italian Food. No other place has the italian food we have here.

Good luck - there are so many good places to eat you won't go wrong.

  8. pizza bagels pasta

  9. georgian

    Its really delicious

    2222 Avenue U

    Brooklyn, NY

    (718) 368 3237

    Restaurant's name is Pirosmani

Try traditional food: khachapuri and khinkali.

    It's very delicious

  10. Almost everything is better in NYC, even the street cart vendors like 53rd st and 6th Halal (chicken and rice guys).

Kat's deli Pastrami to die for, just melts in your mouth.

About every ethnic neighborhood has its best, which is what makes this city great. You want best Chinese go to China town, the best Greek go to Astoria Queens, etc. and there are hidden gems throughout the city and outer boro's.

this site will definitely help..sort of a foodies bible.  http://www.yelp.com/nyc

  11. Try falafels --I like Mamoun's which sells 'em at about $3 (really good and wont break the bank). Maoz is also good but is a little different cuz they have a salad bar thing going on.

Try Ethiopan food at Ghenet  284 Mulberry St Btwn Prince & Houston St.

Bagels of course with cream cheese...Ess-a-Bagel 359 1st Ave at 21st St

Italian -- I love Manetta's in Queens. Everything is delish.

    Enjoy!!

  12. light weight less fatty one .....

  13. bagels, pizza, corned beef/pastrami, egg creams, soft pretzels,  cheesecake, pickles, knishes, smoked fish (lox, whitefish, sturgeon, sable, etc)

Edit:  I haven't seen them for a few years, but in the winter, there were sidewalk vendors that sold hot, roasted chestnuts - they were delicious and you could smell them a block away.  I think there was a tree disease that spoiled the crops recently.

  14. Everything is better in NY.

Not to be elitist, but there is a large immigrant population over here, and thus there is a demand for more authentic dishes.

You should add bagels to your list.
