Seems like it depends on what you want to do. MIT & CalTech good all-around and for research. Do you want to live some where in particular? Do you want to ge into a particular type of research program (Like robotics at Carnegie mellon). Decide what type of research you are interested in and then look in the ASME journals to see where it is being done. THere are also lists in Barrons, US News and other places about the best schools.  Perhaps one more factor, where do you want to work? Are they affiliated with a particular school or program?
