Well first off there are many different types of coal.  Digitboys figures are skewed a bit.

Yes Wyoming does put out a large amount of coal but it known as Subbituminous coal.  But there are only 21 mines in the state.

The most historical coal region would be the Appalachian area of America.  This region would be Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and Tenn.  The largest amounts coming from Pennsylvania and West Virginia.  Coal from these regions fueled the Industrial Revolution in industrial cities like Pittsburgh and Baltimore, and easy access to other cities like New York and Boston.  West Virginia coal miners would have to be the most famous in the country.
