Gas is now $4.99 here so I need something that gets close to 40mpg on the freeway and 500 miles on a full tank of gas.

Has to be automatic.

  1. Mu uncle-in-law has a VW diesel Beetle that gets around 55 mpg highway. VW Passat diesel's can get around 40-45 or better. Check out Fueleconomy.gov for ratings on various used cars that get high mileage.

  2. I would recommend that you get a VW Jetta TDI, and learn how to drive a manual transmission, you'll get better mpg

  3. Look for a Geo/Chevy Metro, which were produced between 1989 and 2000.  The Suzuki Swift is the same car.

They aren't the safest vehicles, but will get you 45mpg or more on the highway.

Another one would be the Ford Fiesta.

If you find one you might want to grab it.  They are selling like hotcakes right now!

Diesel's are going to be overpriced and you are going to spend $6 a gallon.

  4. well if a camry gets 34 mpg and you fill up the 18 gallon gas tank you should go 612 miles, if you can get 38 on corolla you should be able to go like 494 miles( i tihnk it takes about 13 gallons of gas (maybe 14 i dont remember)

  5. Your best bet for 40+ mpg is look at compacts from the late 90s and earlier.  Being compacts they all have tanks of probably 10-13 gallons though.  That would get you 400+ miles on a tank but probably not 500.

Civics, Corollas, Cavaliers, Escorts, and Metros could all come close to that.  The newer ones wont though because they are about 500 lbs heavier and make about 50 more hp.
