Hi. If I want to ship a pallate of merchandise (about 1 ton) about 10,000 km, would I use more carbon credits if shipping it on a cargo plane or a cargo boat? How much more is one than the other?

  1. I don't know, but I would assume planes would burn more fuel to travel this distance.  It takes a lot of energy to lift a plane into the air and then keep it there.

Then again, a boat would take much longer to get to its destination, deals with water resistance, and is usually not as aerodynamic as a plane either.  By the time it reaches its destination, it may have used up as much fuel or more.

So the answer is: I don't know for sure, but I suspect a plane would use more.

  2. plane, by a couple of orders of magnitude.
