Which uses more fuel -- Traveling 1 mile with stops at 3 lights, or going 2 miles with no stops?

Assume avg. size car-- gets 20 mpg (Honda CRV).

  1. Probably going 1 mile with 3 stops uses more fuel.

    Most people don't realize how much fuel it takes just to get up to speed.


  2. the stopping and starting uses much more fuel, i got a v6 so ive learned to coast. Silent 6th all the way

  3. Too many variables including average speed, average time at stops, acceleration times from stops ( is the gas pedal being floored is acceleration gentle...which is much better on gas consumption ), etc., etc., etc...

  4. Stopping and starting at lights uses more fuel but over that short distance you probably won't notice.
