Question:

Which uses more gas - AC or the drag from open windows?

Everyone knows AC uses gas, so some people choose to open their windows instead. But opening windows also burns more gas because of the drag. So which is a more efficient cooling method?

I would imagine it has to to with the speed and AC level, so say we're driving 50mph with windows down, or with AC at medium power and medium coolness.

What do you guys think?

  1. i paid 1300 for ac in my car...im using it.....end of story

  2. ummm i would think ac would be the best.. especailly in newer cars because they are more aerodynamic

  3. With aero of modern vehicles, and the small amount of fuel used to run the AC, windows up wins out.  The drag created by running with the windows down outweighs any benifits gained.

  4. its so close its hard to gage... but air on high or low will be the same has a lot to do with the driver also

  5. Driving I prefer open windows, my wife on the other hand prefers Air Conditioning, I notice when using A.C. the gas mileage goes down, more so than having the windows open.
