Taurine is a amino acid often toted to be high in meats but often deficient in vegan products. I believe there are vegan foods out there high in taurine and want to find out what others know on the subject.

  1. Taurine is not an amino acid. Your lower intestine produces it (I think) so it is not totally necessary to include it in your food.

Besides, almost all vegetables contain a little of all the essential amino acids, if I'm not mistaken.

  2. None. Humans do not need taurine.

  3. They aren't.  But as long as you get a sufficient supply of other amino acids you will be fine.  You don't actually *need* taurine in your diet (cats and other carnivores need it to survive, but we don't).

  4. I know that energy drinks usually have taurine in them, but I'm not sure which ones are vegan.

BUT, taurine is a nonessential amino acid, which means that it is manufactured from other amino acids in the liver; it does not have to be obtained directly through the diet.
