  1. It is really a matter of taste. Myself, I would rather hear someone belting out some gospel than I would opera. That being said, though, It takes some MAJOR training and discipline to sing opera and I admire those who can do it well very very much.

  2. soul/ gospel voice

  3. Operatic.

  4. I don't know why, but gospel has always appealed to me more than classical. Maybe it's what they're singing about, maybe it's the factor of who I can and can't understand, but I just know that I like gospel better.

  5. They both  make my ears bleed.

  6. I agree with some of the other contributors, it's all a matter of taste. Personally, I have more of a classical voice, so that's what I sing, and I really enjoy it, and listening to others singing in the same style. But, at the same time, I think anyone that can belt out a soul solo is fantastic! I don't think either style of singing is better than the other, but personally, I prefer classical/opera to soul/gospel.

  7. They both can be wonderful, it all depends on the context.

A  gospel/soul singer -- no matter how good they are -- trying to sing opera would sound really wierd.

An opera singer -- no matter how good they are -- trying to sing soul or gospel, would sound ridiculous.

Each style of music has its own stylistic demands and requirements and you can't judge them using the same yardstick.

Personally, I prefer soul or gospel music to opera, but that doesn't make soul/gospel singers BETTER than opera singers, its just what I like better.
