Question:

Which volunteer opportunity should I take?

I have two volunteer opportunities in my area..one with the food bank and one with habitat for humanity.

I don't think I have the time to devote to both, and need to choose just one.

The food bank helps many locally (we live in a poor area) and they are very efficient with the funds they do get and don't waste anything> I personally know many familis in the area that couldn't survive without them

Habitat is also very helpful in my area..but seems to help the working class rather than the very poor. When someone gets a house with habitat they get a mortgage payment..and I know many in my area that couldn't afford a habitat house.

THe food bank is packing food and distributing food (easy to do) Habitat is raising funds by telephone ( I have done telefundraising before..it is very hard!)

So what to do?

  1. It seems to me you have already answered that question.  Based on what I have read,  you really want to work for the food bank, so that is where you should go.

Both are good programs, but you should always volunteer where you feel you can make the best contribution.

Congrats on giving back to your community.  You should be very proud of yourself!

  2. Look into your heart, you already know what you want to do.  The best volunteer experience is knowing that you made a difference in someones life.  I too know that many people would go to bed hungry with out the help of foodbanks.

Thank you for caring about others
