  1. G.W.R. 3440 City of Truro introduced 1901 maybe!,i'll stand corrected.

  2. From Churchward becoming CME of the railway in 1902. His first design was for a 4-6-0. He standardised many fttrings for Swindon built locos, including the taper boiler to which you refer. The first class of locos  built with the boiler was the 4-4-0 'City' class of which City of Truro is the last remaining example.

  3. The City class is best known. I thought it was the Bulldogs.

  4. Churchward was the person to influence all further GWR design - the tapered boiler and standardised fittings.

He first introduced the belpair firebox tapered boiler combination, first fitted to numbers 40, 97, 98, 99 and 115. It was first standardised for locomotives in the "City" class.
