Which washing machine (UK)?

My trusty old machine needs to retire! I have a budget of up to about £550. Has anyone got any opinions on which are the best manufacturers/models these days?

I'd like a model with variable temperature min. of 6.5kg load capacity and timer delays. Apart from that, I've no real preferences....

  1. Put a small ammount of bleach in your machine and give it a 40 'c wash. That'll sort out the bacteria that makes the smell between washes. When the time comes to change your machine Indesit has always been a good machine for us. Our machine is on 3 times a day. I believe the national average is 3 times per week.

If your not fond of Indesit remember that spending more usually means you get more. So do you want Peugeot or Mercedes or should i say Creda or Miele?

  2. Our Hotpoint Aquarius has been trouble free apx 4 years old and on ALL THE TIME!!

  3. Frigidaire and Whirlpool seem to be the ones consumer reports gives high ratings too

  4. Indesit, and save some cash!

  5. Go to your local library and have a look at "which?" magazene. I bought a new machine last year - "which" said that  the tricity bendix models went wrong a lot less than any of the other models.

By the way John Lewis are generally the cheapest supplier and they give a two year guarantee for free on all washing machines they sell.

  6. If the old machine is "trusty", why does she need to retire just yet?

My house is too small for a washer and a dryer, so I got a washer dryer. Indesit, with delay timer.

  7. I had a Philco which was well over 20 years old when it finally lay down last year.  The bearing was gone and I was told better just to get a new machine.  I got a Zanussi one for about £300 and it is great.  I cant tell you the model number just at the moment though.  It's not all digital like my Mum's Zanussi which was bought around the same time as mine.  It is simple to use, has 6.5 kg capacity and variable spin speed up til 1600 rpm.  There is half load function as well as economy washes, quick washes and even an extra quick wash (about 1/2 hour I think).  It's not as noisy as my old machine either.  Very happy with my Zanussi indeed.

    Hope this helps.
