I am looking for a sturdy and safe water bottle for daily use.

So far I have encountered the following online, but I am wondering about possible drawbacks.

These are very popular, but I am skeptical because they are made in China. They are about $25 for a 40 oz. Bottle.

Also popular, and Swiss made. But they are made with aluminum, and the whole Alzheimer's thing freaks me out. They are about $25 for a 50 oz. bottle.

I'm seriously thinking about these, because they have no metal or plastic. They are hand made of Leather and medical grade latex in the US. They are a bit pricy at $32 (50 oz.), but I guess my long term health would be worth it.

Does anyone have any good suggestions about these or other bottles?

  1. I'd go with one of the metal ones, because I think the leather sack thingy is a bit "old-fashioned."

Incidentally...you have to pick and choose your fears and concerns about items in regards to health and the environment.  If you don't want plastic, then get over things being made in China or Switzerland, etc.  Ok, well yes aluminum and Alzheimer's.

Not to be rough on you, but the world is full of carcinogens and every day another substance found in something humans use every day  is determined to cause illness or is un-healthy.  I always wonder how people that worry about getting illnesses and live in fear of every substance in the air, water and our food items find any joy in life!  If you are consistently looking to avoid every item that is reported to cause illness you'd end up living in a cave drinking out of a stream--oh, and don't forget the bacteria in the cave and the e-coli in the stream.

There are lots of carcinogens in our consumer products...and guess what?  There always has been.  Even in ancient times the SUN was causing skin cancer (as they have deter mined), but no one worried about that, they just lived and walked in the sun without protection and got tanned.  Nobody knew.  So.....take all those warnings with a grain of salt and live the best you can...don't worry so much!

By the way, where do you get your water that you put in the metal or leather bottle?  Out of a plastic bottle, the sink, or a well?  How do you know the water comes from a pure source and hasn't been treated with chemicals to clean and filter it?

  2. I have a klean kanteen.  Love it.  It doesn't leach out any weird flavor once you give it a good washing.

  3. Kleankanteen is the way to go.  Siggs are made of aluminum which can be toxic.  Their website says over and over that the coding which keeps your drink from touching aluminum is sturdy, but then they admit that you have to wash it with a specail brush so as not to scrape it off.

Leather?  Give a cow a break.  Would you want a cow drinking from something made of you?

They now have bpa-free plastic bottles.
