Which way does the Mississippi River flow?

All my life, teachers have told me that the Mississippi River flowed north toward Minnesota...is this correct?

The Mississippi Rver starts flowing  from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, this means that it  flows in the Southern direction. which makes its  flow direction in the south into the gulf of Mexico.
