Which way does the gear shift go?

On a standard car that drives from the American passenger side,or English? side, which way do the gears go? 1 being to the left, like reading left to right, or opposite with 5 being on the left?

  1. The gearshift will be the same, gear 1 on the left.  It's standardized.  Same with the pedals.


  2. no matter what the car, first is always towards the driver and up, fifth away and up,

    clutch is always left foot,

    turn signals always towards the driver window


  3. it depends on what car you have  there are some that reverse is to left and up and then some that reverse is right and down usually the stick shifter has a pattern on it already if still in question look at the owners manual  but first is left and up  2nd is left and down  3rd is middle and up and so on

  4. 1st gear will be on the far left at the top position on a standard 5 speed... other transmissions with different gears (4 or 6 speeds) may have different shift patterns
