  1. The Italian states...Milan, Florence, Sicily, Rome, etc. were all independant states till the late 1800's when they joined to become the country of Italy.


  2. Besides Italy, Germany was not unified either. (not till 1870)

    Most of the countries of Eastern Europe did not exist yet (except Poland);

    these would have to wait till the 20th century.
