For kids, you'd be safe to any of those.

HP (classified as children's book) uses mostly mythological creatures, which I liked. That was one way that it appealed to adults, I think; a lot of the adults who read the books understood the mythology going on behind the scenes.

Both were appealing. But, mythological creatures make more children find a story interesting. Just like dragons, at least kids already could figure out what a dragon seems to be.

it's pretty creative to make up your own though.
