I have Virgin Media broadband to my pc but would like a wireless router so I can use my laptop. Which type of router do I need so that I can still use my pc and laptop? Do I need anything extra other than the router itself, like any kind of plug in adaptors?

Don't want to buy the wrong thing!

  1. if u have the money dont use G configeration us a N ----more money but worth it  for streaming vids -downloads - an games on line

  2. i would suggest contacting virgin media and speaking to ther technical dept, usually big companies like that can supply you witht he correct equipment for a small fee and at least then you know it will work properly!

  3. linksys. its highly good. oh and G not N

  4. Any - they all do the same thing

  5. Okay, I had the same situation. Virgin road to PC and extra laptop. What you need is a wireless router and that only. That is assuming that >You have the cable from virgin broadband connected to a modem with an ethernet port

           > Your laptop has built in wireless receiver. (You should be able to find this out some how)

When you but the wireless router, be sure to buy this from a trusted and accessible store. Such as PC WorldCurry'sys etc. wouldn'tnt like trecommendeon linene stores because it is a hassle if you have to send the product back. Make sure that it is possible to get a refund or exchange when you buy a wireless router as damage is likely.

If you laptodoesn'tnt have a built in wirelesadaptorer, you will need one. Try to buy a wireless router witadaptorer with it. Such as Philips SNB 5600 routers.

You don't have to worry about the range too much but make sure that the one you buy cover your whole house from its location. Walls reduce range.

If you dont use the Laptop for very very high graphic game 100mbs/s would do more than fine. Even 56mb (or kb i am not sure which one it is) feels the same while I used to use 100.

    Anyway I hope I helped.

  6. I'd suggest either d-Link or Linksys.  I prefer Linksys, but they're both good.  (You can get cheaper routers, but they're not cheaper because the manufacturers want to make less money.)

Each computer needs a wireless adapter.  Laptops come with them, you'll have to add one to the PC probably.  Again, d-Link or Linksys.  An internal card is best, a USB adapter that stands on the desk is second best.  The ones that plug directly into a USB port have limited range.

A Linksys WRT54GS router and WMPS54GS adapter would run you about $90 in the US.  Those are my devices of choice when setting up a wireless network (and I maintain a few of them).

Type N is faster but, since the internet isn't as fast, the only improvement (for the next decade, probably) is when you transfer large files from one computer on the network to another one on the network.  An external disk drive is faster.

  7. you need a dsl modem router. I think I have one spare if you want. My bro was renting a house last year for uni and had virgin installed since about jan feb and used only till may and now he's back and won't be needing next year so I can ask him.

But whatever you buy as long as it says in its spec its for cable then thats what you want. no other plugs or stuff needed as it all comes packed for you. see if you can virgin to  send you one for free. that might be worth a try.
