  1. The WRT series of routers are famous for being one of the most hackable consumer grade routers. If you are choosing between the WRT... or the DIR... series, I'd say go for WRT.

With that being said, you should get the WRT54GS or WRT54GL. You'll find these cheap on craigslist or ebay. The reason is that the GS/GL versions are superior in hardware and firmware compatibility and there isn't much of a price difference. If you do go with the GS (I have this one) you should try to get a version 1-4 (you find the version based on the serial number on the bottom of the router) as these are the most compatible with 3rd party firmware. I suggest versions from 1-2.1 as those have more RAM/Flash memory than the rest.

You'll also want to check out a firmware upgrade called DD-WRT which will enhance your WRT series router.

Still, with all that being said, if you are looking at the DLink DIR-655 due to the built-in Gigabit switch (because you want to transfer really large files very fast on your network) you either need to go with the DLink or do your comparison on a comparable Linksys model like the WRT350N (see last link below) which also has a Gigabit switch. If you decide you absolutely need a Gigabit switch you will have better luck with the Linksys model because it is upgradeable. DD-WRT does support some D-Link models but not the DIR-655 (as far as I know).

BTW, in order to take advantage of a Gigabit switch you need to have Gigabit network adapters in your computers. I'm guessing you don't as you mentioned you are working with only a laptop. You might save money by purchasing a used WRT54GS and if you need Gigabit later just buy a $20-$30 Gigabit switch which you can plug right into your router (this would work with any router you choose BTW).

    Further suggestions:

    1. Purchase a USB wireless network adapter that does 802.11G so you can take advantage of the faster "G" speed. Your computer should also run a little faster using the USB adapter vs the integrated adapter.

    2. Install the free aVast anti virus package to keep yourself safe.

BTW, I noticed that someone (not sure who) gave this post and other good posts a "thumbs-down". I wish they could leave an explanation as to why they feel this way. I just want to understand the reasoning.

  2. Go with the WRT54G. Mine is over 2 years old and have never had an issue with it.

You will be limited to the "B" speed, since that is it what your wireless card can handle.

  3. I prefer Linksys networking equipment.  I've had nothing but satisfaction with Linksys products.  Free over-the-phone support.

In the future, if you're not completely satisfied with your Linksys product, you can start messing around with it.  Check this out:

I'm u sing DD-WRT on my Linksys router and I'm very satisfied.

Linksys products are backed by Cisco.  Cisco s the leading supplier of networking equipment and network management for the Internet.  Can't go wrong.

Check out this link as well:  http://www.dd-wrt.com/

Please be careful not to brick your router.  Brick:  useless paperweight.

  4. if ur going to have the laptop and the router sat next to each other on ur desk....what does it matter !!!!

but if ur unsure cos u want the one with the best designer clothes ~~~ go for the WRT54g

its also compatible with b devices ;-)

  5. D-Link.I own both and D-Link is better, the only reason people like linksys is because they've been out longer but it doesnt mean there better.Like McDonalds Has been out longer than burger king but burger king is BETTER.

  6. I had a WRT54G and it was fine.  If I had a problem with it I rang the nice people at LinkSys who talked me through what to do to put it right and as a big plus it is free to phone them.  I would recommend them to anyone.
