  1. If you have a good highspeed Internet connection, then there are many options to choose from.

For completely free web-based calling, try EarthCaller.  While in beta phase, all calls from your PC to land phones and mobiles in USA/Canada are free.

MediaRingTalk provides free 10 minute calls.  Call back as often as you like.

For very low rates, Skype, Efonica, Gizmo5, PcCall work quite well too.

For all the above services, you just need a PC with headset and microphone.

If you have a little tech savvy, get yourself a Linksys SPA-2102-NA user configurable (unlocked) ATA VoIP adapter.  Then configure it with BYOD (bring your own device) and pay-as-you-go services like CallCentric and InPhonex.  That is what I also do.

This way no PC is required.  Just plug your regular telephone into the ATA to make your calls directly over the Internet.

If you don't want to fiddle with VoIP equipment at all, then use VoIP services like Callcentric and InPhonex to "Roll Your Own Calling Card".  This way you make long distance calls from a regular telephone but at VoIP rates by calling through local VoIP calling card gateways.  Learn how at:  http://www.cqvoip.com

Just configure your VoIP account for calling card gateway access.

Thee are many ways to VoIP - just take your pick as to how you want to do it...

  2. I am really happy with Vonage.
