  1. If ridden under the same conditions, you rebuild the top end on a 2 stroke about twice as often as a 4 stroke, but building the top end on a 4 stroke costs about twice as much so it all evens out.

  2. That depends entirely upon the volumetric efficiency, oil quality, maintenance, and the materials of wearing parts.  But generally speaking, a four stroke.

  3. Definitely a four stroke, two strokes have to be rebuilt pretty often and take more maintence, on the other hand when it comes down to repairs two strokes are much simpler to work on and require less parts at a cheaper price. I have both types and always stay more frustrated with the fourstrokes.

  4. a 4 stroke would last longer(if maintained)

2 stroke internals are under a ton more stress than any 4 stroke could ever dream of, 2 stroke pistons do not ride in a complete cylinder, there are large openings in the cylinder(intake and exhaust ports). Also 2 strokes are more prone to grenading because the crankcase needs to be sealed to prevent a lean mixture and a hole in the piston

2 strokes also get beat alot more than 4 strokes, its that explosive powerband that puts a big grin on your face

  5. Depends 2 strokes are simpler engines, and if they aren't tuned highly and are maintained they will last forever, 4 strokes generally are more reliable and need less maintainence but are more complicated to repair.

  6. People have used both types for many many years.  If you look after your bikes, they are bound to last a long time.

If you do not have time for an oil change, or you would prefer to postpone it,  I would recommend a two stroke.  There is very little to go wrong with a 2 stroke.  Just make sure the petrol goes in with the correct dose of 2 T oil.

If you can do the basic oil change on time and would prefer a cleaner exhaust and a little better mileage than it is the 4 stroke for you.

As technology improves the results benefit both.  The 2 stroke as well as the 4 stroke.  However some states and countries have banned the 2 stroke from use on the street simply because of pollution issues.  Otherwise they can be just as reliable and even a little more fun to drive.

  7. Four stroke without a doubt.

  8. I really have to disagree with a lot of the answers. Maintanence is what makes a engine last long.

A 2 stroke has less moving parts plus oil mixed in the gas which helps parts stay lubed and aids in cylinder wall/piston protection. I have had many oooollldd 2 strokes{boat chainsaw motorcycle lawn mower etc...} and they ran strong{some still running} for a very long time, even compared to the 4stroke. 2 strokes are pushed/forced to work much harder but they are built to handle the higher work load. Each engine has a purpose try using a 4 stroke chainsaw the thing would be way to heavy to carry around all day.

  9. on motocross bikes between rebuilds should be about 3 months for 2 strokes and 1 year plus for four strokes. So four strokes last longer

  10. Pro Motocross racers have the money to do whatever they want to a bike, so they can work more with a 250cc engine compared to 125cc. But freestyle MX prefer the 2 stroke lightness/ powerband.

But your general 4-stroke is similar to a car engine with valves, timing chain, and a cylinder head that will need replacing every rebuild, or 60 hours of riding. Costing about 1500$ at the dealer.

2-strokes will last about 30 hours with a top end rebuild and is simple enough to do yourself for about 100$ or 500$ at a dealer.

Used 4-strokes depricate quick for a reason, a well maintained 4 stroke will last longer but a 2-stroke will be cheaper but easier to blow up.

Its your choice, go 2 stroke if your into cheap thrills like me!
