Which would make a better stop over....?

Staunton or Waynesboro VA for a family traveling with a 9 and 6 year old? We are on our way to Kill Devil Hills, NC, and looking for someplace about halfway to stop and rest for the night. Any tips on attractions, places top stay /eat etc.?

About 45 miles north of Staunton is New Market, VA and Luray Caverns is very close to there.  It is a great attraction and I would honestly recommend it if you can spare the 45 mile difference.

All through that area, along Route 81, you can switch over to scenic Skyline Drive and view the scenery from the comfort of your car!
