I currently use TNR and Arial but they leave spaces between text and that is inelegant. There must be better ones? I heard even The Times of London for which TNR was invented no longer uses it

  1. I believe The Times now uses Times Modern, but I'm pretty sure Times New Roman is still the most commonly used typeface in the world.

Try to create your magazine in a program with advanced OpenType support, and use a decent serif font. Personally, I use Adobe InDesign CS3 (which is brilliant :P), and it comes with several of Adobe's really nice OpenType font families. You can adjust kerning, leading, etc, as much as you want until you get the spacing and typographical colour you're after. There are free/cheaper alternatives, of course.

Whatever you do, don't use Arial :P Use a nice serif font for all your main article text (massively improves readability), and a sans serif font for your headlines, etc.
