Well it depends on what you want to believe.

Officially WWII ended in 1945 in europe, and 31.12 46 if you take the american's signing the treaty as the end and I have seen one program which said it was in the 1960's due to some obscure governance of part of the UK and they signed a peace declaration.

Others say it ended when the Berlin wall fell and Germany was reunited.

I would like to say something about Alex' answer, namely that WW-1 didn't begin in 1918 but it ended in 1918. WW-1 was the War of '14-'18, WW-2 started in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland and ended in 1945.

For Europe the German forces surrendered in Italy on April 29th and Germany surrended on May 7, 1945 but Japan rejected the terms (the Pacific 'side' of WW-2). On August 15, 1945 Japan surrendered after having atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early Augst and the Soviets invaded Japanese-held Manchuria.

An formal ceasefire was signed in May and September 1945, however an official cessation of Hostilities between nations did not offically happen in this country until 1951 and in some countries it lasted even longer due to technicatlities in treaty signing etc (I think Berwick on Tweed is still at war as it was missed off the charter?)
