  1. I remember it changing, but it shows how time flies! It was formally changed in England Wales and Northern Ireland in 1971 .The prime move for the change was the high number of traffic accidents involved in having an earlier August bank holiday on the first  Monday of the month - the idea was that the weather wouldn't be so hot and sunny come the end of the month. Scotland still has the first Monday of August.
