The games were separated in 1987.  The first year to only have one Olympics was 1994

In 1987 the International Olympic Committee determined that 1992 (Albertville and Barcelona) would be the last year that would have both a Winter Games and a Summer Games (for fiscal reasons).  They decided to keep the Summer Games on the existing quadrennial cycle and started the Winter Games on a new Quadrennial cycle beginning in 1994 (Lillehamer)
