Question:

While rebuilding it, I put my bottom bracket spindle in the wrong way around. Do I need to rebuild it again?

Until then I didn't even realise that spindles weren't symetrical. The derailer now scrapes slightly against the chain. Would it be all right to just adjust to derailer to stop it scraping, or do I need to remove the cranks and swap the spindle around?

  1. You need to turn it round the right way.

  2. yep duhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  3. no, you can leave the bottom bracket spindle facing that way and just turn every other part of the bicycle the other way around

  4. No, you'll have to change the spindle around.

The spindle length is developed to do several things. First is to allow clearance between chainstay and chainrings when under load. Second is to avoid damage if the chain should get "sucked" between chainring and frame. Third, it allows proper chainline between the rear cogs and chainrings which reduces wear on the driveline.

Soooo, don't fall into the error of simply readjusting the front derailleur... it causes more problems down the road.

  5. You really should have taken that bike to the shop shouldn't you! You'll have to change it round or there's a good chance that after a while putting pressure on it, it'll bend out of shape or snap.
