  1. I've never heard of teaching "the halogens", but if you're teaching sections of the periodic table, pass out blank ones and have them color code them.  

    If you're doing reactivity you can do an activity series lab, and you can dissolve halogens in water and do displacement reactions with them as well. You want mineral water to dissolve the halogens and a water layer to dissolve the salts.  

    You can mix chlorine gas with acetylene gas to make fireworks underwater.
