Question:

Whirlpool Side-by-Side Refrigerator GD5SHG

The house we bought a couple of months ago came with a whirlppol Side-by-side Refrigerator model GD5SHG (partial number). It stopped cooling on both sides a couple of days ago.

The coils were completely blocked with dust on the front and I have cleaned that. The condensor fan is running. The condensor is running I think - it sounds as if it is cycling on and off rather quickly.

Looking on the internet I see that the defrost timer tends to go out causing the evaporator coils to freeze and suggest checking the evaporator coils, as well as adjusting the defrost timer until the fridge shuts off.

The problem I have is that the back of the fridge is a sealed panel (apart from the lower section behind the compressor, fan, water connection) and I don't see a way to get it off in order to check the coils. I don't think they were iced up; however, as I have had the fridge off for the better part of the past 36 hours and there is no water in the pan at the bottom of the fridge.

According to the parts manual I found on the Whirlpool website, the defrost timer is at the top of the fresh foods section inside the control panel and I don't see how to access it.

There has been 3-4" behind the fridege since we moved in.

What am I missing? Is there anything else I can check prior to calling a repair guy?
