If you're looking for a canary bred for its song you'll probably have to find a breeder.  Pet stores usually carry canaries that are pretty much mixtures of Border Canaries, Fife Canaries and others bred more for their body type and color.  But these canaries usually sing well.

There are four canaries that are bred specifically for their song:

The German or Hartz Mountain Roller sings with a closed beak and has a quieter rolling kind of song.

The Belgian Waterslager has a quieter bubbling type of sound, much like bubbling water.  In a noisy household both the Roller and the Waterslager might be hard to really appreciate.

The American Singer doesn't have a "standard" type of song but it generally a much stronger song than the Roller or the Waterslager.  

The Spanish Timbrado has a strong, high, metallic song and the Tim fanciers like the fact that it is very closely related to the wild canary.

You can hear each of the different songs if you search Google for each of the song canaries.  There is a marvelous difference between them all.

I found that the best singers were the Borders and Gloster breeds,these are what were used mainly down the mines,Followed by Red factors which are in most cases bred from Glosters and are fed  a type of  Red dye to give them their red colour.

There  are other breeds but they tend to be more expensive,than the above,
