  1. Depends on the country and location.  But generally, bus is cheaper.

  2. Depends on the location and the time you have to travel to get there. But look these sites up and compare:

  3. prices really are not based on mode such as bus, train, plane, but more on the markets.

thus, it really depends on the city pairs, the date and maybe even time of day of travel, how full or empty is the transport vehicle at the time you are making reservations, and the level of competition from other carriers and modes.

frequently, trains actually come in at lower price than buses, bcs each bus can only hold about 40 people, whereas a train can hold up to 300, 500, or even 1200 or more people, so more chance to get more revenue.

of course the train vehicles (cars and locos) cost more than a bus too, but 1 loco engineer can haul 1200 people while 1 bus driver can only haul 40 people.  so there is an "economies of scale" involved too.  an airplane can usually handle 100-300 people.

the largest cost for any transport carrier is LABOUR, followed closely by FUEL.

remember too, tho', that load factors play a large part.  just bcs a bus can hold 40 people, or a plane can hold 100, doesnt mean that every day's operation will be full.  some days will have empty seats.

so fares are sometimes discounted, deeply, to fill some seats irregardless of costs or profits, bcs the seats are traveling anyway, and better to get even 20$ than 0$.

but likewise, a historically busy travel day (say, the sunday after thanksgiving), the maximum fares are charged with no discounting, bcs if you dont buy it, someone else will.  if a carrier can count on having a full service or even on having to turn away customers, they will NOT be discounting that day's travel.

prices also depend on competition.  in general, markets that have all 3 modes competing will generally have lower fares than a city pair that has only 1 mode/carrier.  you can see this in cases, especially with southwest airlines, where even the airplane is cheaper than both the bus and the train.

transport pricing can not really be generalized, so altho the bus can be cheaper, it is just as likely that the train, or even a plane, might be cheaper than the bus.

you just need to check the travel for your particular city pairs AND travel date to find out.

  4. never be sure which is cheaper my line train about half the bus fare

  5. The bus is much cheaper.

  6. Usually the bus costs less--but is also less reliable.

Only last weekend a family member had a bus ticket from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh. She was supposed to leave around 9:30 in the morning and arrive about 3:30.

She got in at 11:00 that night. The driver never showed up. Three hours later, Greyhound had a substitute driver, who got lost when he took the wrong exit, missing the turn-off to the major highway he needed to be on.

Our son uses the train frequently. When it's late, it's more like 45 minutes, which beats 7.5 hours.

  7. Where I live, the bus is $4.00 more than the train, and takes 14 minutes longer to arrive in the nearest major city.  $36 for rail, $40 for bus and a mere $1,750 for air.

Oh, and this is for a round trip.  One-way distance is 150 miles.
