White Birch overcomes Circa in Hampton Cup: 11-9 – Polo Update
The White Birch foursome has been emerged victorious over Circa in the round match of the Hampton Cup being held at the Bridgehampton Polo Club in California. Fred Mannix was real hero of the play who made six notches in the six chukkas and earned victory
for White Birch.
Top point-scorer of the day – Fred Mannix talked to the media it was not any task as the opponent side was also quite talented line-up. “We just didn’t get it going in the opening chukker and they’re a very talented team. It was a lot of fun. It was a lot
of hard work, but a lot of fun,” he added. Commenting on the performance of Circa players, he stated, “Pepa had the game of his life today. He played very well throughout the match.”
White Birch spotted Circa by a solitary handicap goal which helped the latter one to establish their dominance in the play. A penalty conversion from Magoo Laprida not only doubled the tally for Circa that boosted the morale of other team players. The White
Birch strikers failed to add their name at the scoreboard in the first seven minutes. Before going into the second set of play, Martin Pepa added a couple of more goals and expanded the lead up to four goals, 4-0.
Amazingly, the second chukka unfolded in the hands of Laprida who converted a penalty shot and extended the lead up to five. From the other side, Mariano Aguerre accounted for two goals and closed out the period with White Birch trailing by two goals.
In the third set of play, Pepa added a couple of classic goals from the field and stretched the lead up to five goals. However, Mannix and Aguerre scored once each and reduced the lead down to three at half-time.
Both White Birch and Circa swapped a goal in the fourth set of play to make the game more interesting. Pepa scored the goal for Circa while Mannix did it for White Birch. The White Birch attack came alive in the fifth frame and ruined the defensive line
of Circa. They obtained four goals while holding rivals only for one goal in the seven minutes of play. Mannix and his team-mate Aguerre scored two goals apiece against the single effort of Guille Aguero. With the time completed, both were locking horns at
nine-each stalemate.
The two goals from Mannix in the last set of play put White Birch ahead in the way to success and put Circa under heavy pressure. The Circa team failed to add any score in the period and lost the match 11-9.
