White Birch overpowers Yellow Cab in Monty Waterbury Cup: 16-10 – Polo Update
Mariano Aguerre scored seven times and had an assist, as White Birch notched a convincing 16-10 win over Yellow Cab in the maiden fixture of the 2011 Monty Waterbury Cup being held at the Bridgehampton Polo Club in New York.
Aguerre, the former ten-goal handicap whose rating was downed to nine by the handicap committee after his unimpressive performance, displayed one of the brilliant games in the season and ruined the defence line of Yellow Cab. It was quite a one-sided contest
where White Birch opened the game at a very fast pace and scored five goals in the first seven and half minutes of the match. On the other hand, the resilient defence from Birch kept Yellow Cab at bay throughout the first chukka.
Aguerre added four of the first five goals and put opponent Yellow Cab under heavy pressure. Freddie Mannix was the other striker from White Birch who accounted for a solitary goal in the opening period to close out the first chukka at 5-0.
White Birch continued a fast and furious style of play and dominated the second frame by scoring four more goals while limiting Yellow Cab only for a single attempt. Mannix and Aguerre added two goals each in the frame and expanded the White Birch lead up
to nine goals. After a lot of missing action, Nacho Figueras put his team on the scoreboard before going into the third round. Yellow Cab was trailing by eight goals after only 15 minutes of play.
In the third set of play, the White Birch team did not show slacken either on the defence or offence and added three more scores. It was a period which somewhat decided the winner of the match. Jake Stimmel, Mariano Gracida and Mannix scored one goal each.
On the other side, the Yellow Cab once again failed to obtain a score in the frame and completed the half-time trailing by 11 goals.
At last the players from Yellow Cab cranked up their performance and attempted to make a comeback into the game. Luis Escobar and his team-mate Figueras added one goal each while Gracida and Mannix answered one goal apiece for White Birch.
The fast-paced action continued in the fifth chukka where Yellow Cab scored three goals while limited White Birch to two. Stimmel and his team-mate Mannix added one each for White Birch polo team. On the other side Escobar and Michel Dorignac converted one
penalty shot each while Figueras added another goal from the field. Yellow Cab cut the lead down to ten goals with one chukka left to play.
In the final, Yellow Cab showed impressive performance and scored four goals while holding White Birch at bay. Escobar and Dorignac notched two goals each in the final set of play but it could not save them from a humiliated defeat. The White Birch polo
team won the game 16-10.
