Dentists it seems are harder to get into then University, all of them are either too much money or not taking patients.

I have a black filling in my back tooth, the filling is quite big. I want to just change it from black to white is it possible to get a kit or buy some white filling mix and do it yourself??

If so, where would i buy the stuff to enable me to do it from??

Thanks!!

  1. You can buy white temporary filling kits, but placing it over a black filling wouldn't work. When a filling is placed the dentist ensures that it is the correct level so it doesn't catch on your other teeth surrounding it.  Placing a white filling on top could lead to problems, and if you placed it thinly then it would most likely snap off.  The only real solution is to visit a dentist.

  2. If you're worried about the filling in general, you really should just find a clinic or dental school where they accept payment plans. It is definitely NOT a good idea to try doing your own dental work. And is your filling black, or silver? If it's a large silver filling in a back tooth, a tooth colored filling is not a good idea. Tooth colored fillings are not nearly as strong as a silver filling and are not recommended for back teeth. Your back teeth are used for chewing and are subjected to a lot of force. A tooth colored filling cannot handle it, so if you're just worried about the color, just stick with the silver.  And no, you will not be able to just cover the silver filling with a white filling. The two materials will not bond to each other, and a temporary filling material would not stay in place as it would not be filling a hole. As soon it you'd bite your teeth together it would just fall off.

  3. You can buy white temporary filling mixes from the chemists but thats all they are, temporary. They wear down fairly quickly and they're meant really for emergencies such as broken teeth or lost crowns until you can get to the dentist. I broke a wisdom tooth and it worked great but they shouldn't be used for long.

EDIT: Yes you could just cover up the black filling. The mix just molds into whatever space you pit it. However doing it yourself long-term could be risky. If your tooth wasn't cleaned properly or the filling wasn't placed correctly and germs got underneath it, then that could cause problems. But yes, physically you could cover the black filling!
