White Nights International Challenge: Baptiste Careme-Audrey Fontaine wrap up Mixed Doubles title
Baptiste Careme and Audrey Fontaine, the talented shuttlers from France, stole the limelight as they proved their worth on court and bagged Mixed Doubles title at the White Nights International Challenge 2012 in Russia, on Sunday, July 8.
In the final encounter, the French couple defeated the higher ranked Wojciech Szkudlarczyk and Agnieszka Wojtkowska of Poland in a smashing fashion.
Careme and Fontaine, who were seeded at number four in Mixed Doubles category at the championship, stunned their higher ranked Polish rivals who were number three seeds in the main draw.
The lower ranked Careme and Fontaine showed a staggering performance when they thrashed Wojciech and Agnieszka in straight games with a convincing margin by taking just 34 minutes on court.
The third seeded Wojciech and Agnieszka failed to extend their staggering run in the tournament as they failed to overpower their lower ranked French opponents and bowed down to them without taking any game.
In the first game, Careme and Fontaine played composed badminton as they did not committed mistakes at early stage and managed to control the pace of rallies.
The French couple played tremendous badminton by keeping the pace of rallies high and set up an 11-7 gap until the mid-game interval.
After the one-minute break, Careme and Fontaine continued their fantastic performance on court as they did not let their higher ranked challengers to fight back.
The French shuttlers were in commanding position in concluding half of opening set and they won it with a four-point advantage of 21-17.
In the following set, Careme and Fontaine showed urgency and occupied the driving seat by playing attacking and positive badminton. Their impressive work at net pushed the Polish shuttlers on back foot.
Until the mid-game break, Careme and Fontaine were sailing smoothly while remaining miles ahead on the board at 11-5.
After the break, the French couple did not lose their focus at any stage and easily bagged the game with a huge margin of 21-10.
Careme and Fontaine won the Mixed Doubles crown by ending up the final battle in two sets with a stunning 21-17 and 21-10 score on the board.
