White chalk in hanging baskets.?

Re my previous question I meant the chalky substance was in the soil not on the basket itself. Thanks for those who have already replied and no more sarcastic replies please Ian W

  1. The compost you use in hanging baskets has a high concentration of fertilisers - in particular potassium nitrate.  This dissolves in water, but leaves a white deposit when the water evaporates.  You should water your baskets every day.  If you do, don't worry about it.
