Question:

White chiffon wedding veil.... Stencil embroidery? How hard is it really?

I'm pretty patient and don't give up easily but I just don't want to ruin my wedding veil and want to spice it up.

How hard is it to use a stencil for embroidery? I want to use beads and basically glue them on in the right place...

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

  1. First of all, I would be really careful with chiffon...it's very delicate (obviously) and it's really easy to make a mistake and ruin it.  I agree with the comment about going to the bridal department, but what I would do to really make it unique and make it your own would be to go to a craft store and brainstorm.

If it were me, I would probably go for the tiny swarovski crystals you can find in craft stores in the bead department and just stitch them on, either along the edge or in the pattern you were going for.  They can be spaced pretty far apart and still have a stunning effect from the sparkle.  They won't take much time, either, since each one would only need a couple of stitches.  Even a beginner who's never sewn before could do it.

It's great that you have a lot of patience...mix that with a little creativity and thinking outside the box and you'll have a veil to be jealous of.  Good luck to you, hun!

  2. I would say it's more time consuming than hard . Buy a piece of fabric first to practice on. I used Allene's Jewel it and it worked GREAT ;))) Good Luck

  3. Go the bridal dept of a fabric store.  They are a great source of info.

  4. Stenciling is possible on chiffon but probably not the route I would take. There are several options/ways to add embellishments to a bridal veil.

    1. Find some interesting lace, cut into patterns, add sequins, beads, cording, etc. then attach this piece to the veil with tiny overcast stitches.

    2. Look in the bridal dept. for appliques that are already sequined and beaded and attach these to the veil. eBay is also a good source for these.

    3. Transfer your stencil pattern to a piece of fine netting, put the netting in an embroidery hoop and do your needlework. After completing, trim around the edges then attach.

    4. Machine embroider directly on the chiffon, however, use a layer of stabilizer above and another layer below the area to be embroidered (would work with hand stitches also)

    5. If you only want to use beads then I would recommend a good jewelry glue like Jewel-it, as it dries clear and flexible. Use sparingly. Place a section of fabric in a hoop, place directly over the stencil and working from directly over top, add your beads/pearls, etc. Do one small section at a time and do not move until dry. If you plan to use crystals or rhinestones, I highly recommend using Swarovski as others will not reflect the light and will photograph as black specks.
