I just noticed my horse has white lines around the hair line of his hoof. It's not thick. It's like wierd jelly-ish white stuff. I'm very very scared. I don't know much about this stuff. He isn't lame though.. But this just developed ver the past few days. I told me horsey friend to look for me because I really don't know what it is. Should I panic??

  1. White line?  The hoof grows out from the top and sometimes it will be slightly different color.  Does the white line run vertical or horizontal?  If you are concerned, please ask a horse shoer or vet the next time they come visit your stable.  Are the lines on all 4 feet?

  2. The area around the top of a horses hoof where it meets the hair line is called the coronary band. The hooves grow from this point and it is much like the cuticles in humans.

Many times they will get rough, sometimes soft and will sometimes seem to peel. The only places a hoof can absorb moisture is in this small area and through the soles, if he's been in water or mud it might just be too moist. If that is the case remove him from the mud area.

As long as your horses hooves are healthy and strong I wouldn't worry over it too much. If it continues or his hooves themselves seem to be softening call your vet or farrier to look at it. But it's pretty common and in over 35 years with horses I've never seen it cause a problem.

  3. It's called the periopolese and it is very important in the moisture of the hoof. White line disease is infection of the white line. The white line is between the hoof wall and the sole on the bottom of the foot. It is usually not visible unless you pare away the sole a little in that area with the hook end of a hoof knife.

When applying any type of hoof dressing to a horse you should always make sure to coat the periopolese. This part of the hoof lies right at the hairline at the top of the hoof. When it rains or is damp the periopolses can get spongy and seem to swell a bit. When the weather is dry it tends to get dry also. It is nothing to worry about in fact the conditions you describe are a good thing.

  4. No, no need to panic, this is normal.  What you are looking at is what I would compare to your cuticle.  It is where the hoof grows out from.  If the horse has been standing in water, or in the rain or just bathed or walked through some wet grass or crossed a creek etc etc..this will happen, nothing to worry about,

  5. I know what it is, and it's normal.  It might be more visible if the horse was just washed.   I think it's part of the periople but I am not totally sure.

  6. ?????????????????

  7. Well, I think I know what it is.  My horse got that on all his hooves after I bathed him.  Sometimes water gets trapped up in there.  It should go away pretty fast too.  Have you bathed him recently or has it rained recently?

  8. That's his coronet band.  It's normal.

When the horse has been walking in wet grass, standing in water, or gotten bathed it'll look white and jellyish and be more noticeable than the rest of the time.

Don't panic.   If you're worried, stick him in a stall and let it dry out overnight.  You'll see we're  right.

  9. Is it this?

  10. i wish i could help but if she is eating and preforming fine then just keep an eye on it but if she loses her appitite or anything out of the norm call the vet.

    good luck :D
