I told you there was an educational program that if one passed, they were accepted into the college of their choice, regardless if they had the grades to originally get in?

What if I told you most of them were white? What would you think of this program?

Also, how is legacy and more unfair than Affirmative Action?

  1. Legacy is different from Affirmative Action because it isn't our governments way of saying "hey, I'm sorry so please go to this college or take this job that you aren't qualified for OVER someone who is".

A legacy slot is a symbol of pride for universities.  If they have multiple generations of a successful family attending, they look better.

And there's no way somebody can respond to the first part of your question because you don't explain WHAT the educational program is.  If it actually tests their educational merit and can determine that the person would be a determined, hard working student in college but they simply made some bad choices in high school, then I'd be for it.

But here's the thing: aid shouldn't be given to minorities simply because they are minorities, it should be given to people that actually NEED a helping hand.  Impoverished people, no matter race or gender, should be getting some sort of "affirmative action" if they can prove that they would work their butts off in college/the work field.  BUT that's not the case with Affirmative Action, "AA" simply takes minorities that aren't qualified (or not as) for positions in jobs and schools and puts them on a list above the "majority" (in other words, white males).

So our societies way of saying "Sorry the ancestors of some of our white people treated you badly" is by giving out this unearned right of passage to people who haven't showed that they deserve it.  And honestly, I feel its completely cruel because it acts as a blow against ALL white males, regardless of whether or not their ancestors were involved with any of the previous prejudice towards minorities.  For example, I'm of Irish and Russian-Jewish decent, meaning when my ancestors came to America (long after slavery), they were forced into sweat shops and crime to get by.  Where's our "affirmative action"?

  2. You never know, some black people might be against Affirmative Action as well.

  3. I think it has nothing to do with race! Poor people do not have the chance to get in and minorities are more likely to be poor.

  4. I'd say yay... too bad I'm not one of those rich white guys people keep talking about.

Though isn't it a bit racist to hire someone just on their skin color?

  5. Be it the "good ol' boy system" or Affirmative Action, any system that puts less than the best players on the field is defective.  An honest assement of ability should be the ideal.  Of course at the end of the day it does not matter.  The worthy will not be denied no matter how many obstacles are placed in their way and the f***s of humanity will fail no matter how many opportunities they are afforded based on a privelege they did not earn.

Racial quotas or racial privelege are the same in the end and are nothing but futile attempts at social engineering and the subversion of human nature.  Both are failures in the grand scheme of life.
