  1. Anything that hangs out the back of a vehicle by more than 2 feet must have either a red or safety orange flag or a red light. However there are some people that just tie anything to it and get by with it. The law is 2 feet out the back.

  2. Use bright orange or red if you have it.

White is used as a distress signal.

  3. Red flag or red towel for anything at 3 feet or longer...........

  4. I believe that you must flag or flare anything sticking farther than 3 feet from the rear of the vehicle.

  5. never heard of a white flag as a warning flag most always its red...

  6. It should be red.

This tells other drivers to maintain proper distance from the vehicle with the protruding object. You should allow at least one more car length of distance in that situation. Base the distance on your speed. There is what is called the "three second rule". This means that you should be a three second distance behind the vehicle in front of you. When there is an object (ladder, wood, other cargo) sticking out the back window or over a tailgate, you should add the distance equivalent to one more second.

If the object is not properly secured, move away from the vehicle. Change lanes or get ahead of them. You can also call the police as unsecured objects are illegal and dangerous.
